Arts Education and The Nelsonville Music Festival
The Nelsonville Music Festival is produced by and is a fundraiser for Stuart’s Opera House. The Opera House is the cornerstone of the historic Public Square in Nelsonville, Ohio. It is dedicated to its role as a regional leader in the arts, a center for public expression, and an economic development partner for Southeastern Ohio. Through our art programming and educational outreach, we continue to be profoundly intertwined with the population of Nelsonville and surrounding communities by providing free opportunities to participate in the arts.
Our Arts Education Program furthers our mission by providing much-needed art education and inspiration to our region. We offer an affordable, broad-based program focused on performing arts. The special events, afterschool activities, day-time classes, and summer programs allow for arts education that reaches Southeast Ohio residents of all ages and backgrounds. The overarching outcome of our program is diverse participation where community identity can be freely and openly expressed. Our program is designed to be flexible and responsive to community needs.
Under the umbrella of Stuart’s Art Education Programs, we offer; theater performances for primary students, the Afterschool Music Program (AMP), a visiting artist and artist-in-residence program, a drama club and production for Nelsonville-York High School, a creative writing program for adults, regional coordination for the national Poetry Out Loud competition, private music lessons for children ages 6-18, an Appalachian Music Program in partnership with Athens County Public Libraries, and free admission to all children under 12 to the Nelsonville Music Festival.
Artists in Residence: Stuart’s Opera House hires teaching artists to conduct workshops in Athens County schools. In partnership with local school districts, teachers, artists, and funders, these residencies are provided for free for participating schools. Artists and hosts collaboratively plan art-making experiences that engage participants within a mutually supportive and creative learning environment. The artist also shares their artistic work with residency participants and the larger community. Check out our Kids Area to see the culmination of this year’s residencies at Federal Hocking High School!
Our education programs receive funding from Epstein Teicher Philanthropies, The Ohio Arts Council, The Johnny B Fund, Benefest, The Athens Community Music Festival, The McClelland Fund, Athens Sunrise Rotary, ETC, Kleinpenny Education Fund, Peoples Bank, and several individuals and local businesses.
